In 2021, Chancellor Angela Merkel retires from office. She is being honored by a grand military ceremony, broadcasted live. Although the socalled “Zapfenstreich” (tattoo) is a 300-year-old German military tradition, the images of German soldiers marching through the night while holding burning torches disturb both German and international audiences: many associate the show with historical images of the Nazis. Despite the different context, the ceremony sparks a discussion:
How problematic is the portrayal of military power by Germany, 80 years after the horrors of World War II? Or more generally: How should military institutions present themselves as part of a modern democracy today?
Three years later, the international group Boys* in Sync is looking back at the ceremony. In ZAPFENSTREICH they are reflecting on Denmark’s and Germany’s roles in the newly emerged European defense situation. The Boys* reconstruct the key moments of the ceremony, treating the military movements as choreographies that question masculinity, conformity, and power and eventually blending them with moments of disruption, queerness, and intimacy.
A theatre evening that, with its multiple shifts in perspective on the ritual of the Zapfenstreich, teaches us to see, hear and feel in a delightfully different way – and to take a stand.

Boys* in Sync is a theatre collective with members from Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Their work navigates the tension between queer body practice, pop aesthetics and documentary performance. In 2019, Boys* in Sync travelled to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with their first production. Since then, the group has been invited to numerous European theatre festivals with their work.
Im Jahr 2021 beendet Angela Merkel ihr Amt als Bundeskanzlerin. Zu ihren Ehren findet eine Militärzeremonie statt, die von mehreren TV Sendern live begleitet wird. Zwar ist der sogenannte »Zapfenstreich« eine 300 Jahre alte deutsche Militärtradition, bei seiner Ausstrahlung irritieren die Bilder von deutschen Soldaten, die mit Fackeln durch die Nacht marschieren, jedoch das deutsche wie internationale Publikum: Viele assoziieren die Show mit historischen Bildern der Nazis. Obwohl die Ausgangssituation eine andere ist, löst die Zeremonie eine Diskussion aus: Wie soll sich das (deutsche) Militär als Institution einer modernen Demokratie präsentieren?
Mit dieser Frage beschäftigt sich das internationale Kollektiv Boys* in Sync und stellt die Militärparade kurzerhand selbst nach: Als Performer und Tänzer*innen aus verschiedenen europäischen Ländern behandeln sie die militärischen Bewegungen als Choreografien, die Männlichkeit, Konformität und Macht hinterfragen, und vermischen sie mit Momenten der Irritation, Queerness und Intimität.
Ein Theaterabend, der in seiner mehrfachen Perspektivenverschiebung auf das Zapfenstreich-Ritual einem lustvoll anders sehen, hören, fühlen – und Position beziehen lehrt.

Boys* in Sync ist ein Theaterkollektiv mit Mitgliedern aus Deutschland, Norwegen, Schweden und Dänemark. Ihre Arbeiten bewegen sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen queerer Körperpraxis, Popästhetik und dokumentarischer Performance. 2019 reisten Boys* in Sync mit ihrer ersten Inszenierung zum Fringe Festival Edinburgh. Seitdem wird die Gruppe mit ihren Arbeiten zu zahlreichen europäischen Theaterfestivals eingeladen.
